Deep ruby colour. Great aromatic complexity and freshness, with quite unique (but typical from the Abandonado vineyard) balsamic and tar flavours, liquorice and black berries. Pure refinement, with delicacy, minerality and an extraordinary purity of fruit. It feels the schist, the surrounding forest, the freshness of the altitude, in a pure expression of the vineyard’s nature. An exercise of pure elegance and class of one of the most iconic vineyards of the Douro and Portugal.
Alves de Souza is a vineyard over 80 years old, with several lacks due to a partial abandonment for some years. Situated on a slope with intense sun exposure and great pieces of shale, so harsh that not even a blade of grass could exist. The people of the estate had fast nicknamed it “Vine of the Abandoned one”. Its value was however already recognized: the few grapes born in the vine generally integrated the best blends, year over year. Along with isolating the vineyard there was also the will to try to explore the different faces of the estate. And if in the Gaivosas we search the purest expression of its terroir and in the Reserva Pessoal its more elegant side, in the Abandonado the conditions were changed, followed new trails, leaving the final refinement to the noblest and rare Portuguese oak. Homage to the also unique old vines of the Douro, that one day will disappear. Today we celebrate them.
